Karnataka Flood Funds - Nov. Update

Sharanu,

Ref: BOD meeting Nov.18.2009 – Karnataka Flood Victims Fund Raising

Many of you and chapters have taken important steps in raising funds or working with other entities to help Karnataka flood victims.  From the time Shiva Maganahalli' s email communique on Karnataka flood victim's help, few things have happened and we are trying to move ahead as quickly as possible to send the financial help needed.

Maryland chapter has pledged or raised more than $13K and expressed strong interest in using JSS, Mysore Mutt's auspice.  Furthermore, JSS Suttur Swamiji Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji and VSNA president Sundresh Siddiah communicated on ways of working out the disbursement of these funds to the victims.  Though there are other NGOs that currently helping in Karnataka, the missions of VSNA and JSS align well and JSS was one of the organization that got involved in the relief from the beginning. A JSS video related to their effort can be seen here.

Though in the BOD meeting it was agreed to short list a NGO and then proceed, with the above developments and to expedite the help to flood victims, executive body now asks BOD to approve of sending the funds to JSS at the earliest.  In fact one of the BOD member is possibly heading to India and hand over the check to Swamiji.  In the next two days, if you have any concern on this you can reply to this email (vsna_officers@ yahoogroups. com) with details. Otherwise, this overrides the earlier BOD decision.

Any chapter or member who is interested in donating through VSNA, please make a check payable to VSNA and send it to:
Latha Mallikarjuna
214 Leaside Drive
Monroeville, PA 15146

Make your check payable to "VSNA" with note “Karnataka Flood Victims Fund” and a donation receipt will be sent to each donor.

Also, for any VSNA family or member that makes $2000 (two thousand dollars) their family name will be inscribed on the house built using that donation.

Local chapters should continue to make all efforts in raising the funds through VSNA in their coming functions/meetings and a presentation can be downloaded from Yahoo group under folder “Karnataka Flood Victims” to present to local members.

VSNA Executive Committee

Basava Jayanti updates - Pittsburgh Chapter

Sharanu.

Basava Jayanthi was celebrated at our house on Saturday May 30, 2009 with religious fervor. Shoba and I welcomed the guests.

The program included veerashaiva songs, Pooja, Vachana recitation by Mrs. Jayasheela Murthy.
Dr. Vamadeva Murthy, Mr. Patil and Mr. Sonth talked about Basavanna and his legacy. I explained to the children how Mahatma Gandhi was influenced by Basavanna and his vachanas.

Ghandhiji adopted Basavanna’s principles of “Husiyanudiyalu beda” and” kolabeda” as Truth and Non-violence - two great ammunitions to obtain independence to India and became the Mahatma – The Great Soul. Soyna Nanjundappa sang Kannada movie “Mallammana Pavada’s" song “Sharanenbe naa Shashibhooshana” to praise veershaiva religious leaders like Allama Prabhu, Basavanna, Akka, Nanjundesha and our Veerashaiva Dharma.

Baby Avnitha who is six weeks young, daughter of Lingaraj Patil and Deepa Patil was inducted to the Veerashaiva Samaja of Pittsburgh Chapter. All the ladies welcomed her by doing the Aarathi.
The program concluded with Maha Mangalaarathi followed by scrumptious pot luck dinner.
Mother Nature was very cooperative that helped us prepare pav’s in our backyard.

There were in excess of 55 guests including children.
Overall the event turned out to be a memorable one.

Shoba and I thank every Veerashaiva for attending the Basava Jayanthi celebrations and extending their helping hands to make this event memorable.

This was truly a community event.

Here are some photos of Basava Jayanthi celebrations from Pittsburgh Chapter....

Chi.Saanika - Proves her blooming talents, again!

Sharanu.

A flower's fragrance spreads without bounds, all it needs is a supportive medium. Supportive environments by parents /Maryland-Virginia VSNA Chapter, coupled with inherent talents are the making this little bright Veerashaiva to showcase her singing prowess. Vachanaas come alive in her nascent vocals.

Surprising, yet a reality!

Sharanu.

Since the time when a VSNA blog was practically introduced (http://vsnasc.blogspot.com/) and faced stiff resistance from continuing further, being a member of VSNA, it had been a genuine intent to open up the details of VSNA Organization, to broaden the horizons to many across our own community and especially to the 'new comers'. A Veerashaiva walking into this country / other countries, has feeble chance of getting to know our organization's very existence abroad. A most recent example was participation by a local family in Irvine area, Smt. and Sri.Shivanand Bellad, who have been in Irvine, CA, US for 8 years, but did not know VSNA-Southern California chapter's very existence. Contrary to our perceptions, the reality speaks for itself, otherwise!

Here is an inquiry by a Veerashaiva in Atlanta, GA, requesting for contact details of VSNA Atlanta chapter, which has already been forwarded to proper channels for follow through:
-----
Hi Mr. Nagesh,
Could you please provide me some details about VSNA atlanta and how to become a member.

Thanks,
Usha Harali
-----

The credits entirely belong to the forethoughts of our executive committee, to expand the community's involvement, for it's / organization's better days ahead of us, through the usage of blogging. Hope is what life thrives on, hope this blog becomes more useful, resourceful and meaningful to reflect the very ethos of our Veerashaivism.

Nimmava,
Nagesh Tavaragerimath

VSNA Youth Member - Abhinav Reddy - A Role Model

Dear VSNA Chicago Chapter Members,

Happy Basava Jayanthi !!

In honor of Basava Jayanthi, I would like to invite you to participate in a food drive (Dasoha) on May 10th. Your donation will help stock the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Every year the Northern Illinois Food Bank helps thousands of underprivileged people in Illinois to get the food they need to sustain daily life.

One of Basavanna’s most important principles was dasoha. Dasoha is giving some of what you have earned from honest work to others in the community who are less privileged than you in order to bring them to the same level as you. By contributing to this food drive you will be helping feed thousands of people in Illinois who are under the national poverty line.

It would be really helpful if every family bought in 5 or more pounds of food. Or if you are unable to bring in food any donation as small as $5 or more could be used to purchase food that would then be donated.

Please see the attached document for the list of needed items. Please do not donate expired food. Check expiration dates before donating. And for more information on the Northern Illinois Food Bank, please visit: http://www.northernilfoodbank.org/.

Thank you for your support and generosity!

Basaveshwara Vachana Sheela Mantapa

I would like to extend my deepest wishes for the festival of Shankaranthi today. I wish that all of you must be blessed with the love, happiness and joy of celebrating this occasion of Shiva and his love for Lord Basavanna who was responsible for the establishment of the first welfare state in India during the 12th century.

As the President of the Basaveshwara Vachana Sheela Mantap Committee I would like to share with you in brief, our desire to commemorate the Vachanas of the holy saint Shri Basavanna who was born in our village of Ingleshwar in 1134 AD. We express our desire that you kindly review this proposition and provide us financial assistance towards the construction of the Basaveshwara Vachana Sheela Mantap at Ingleshwar.

We have already started work on this project with the limited financial resources that were made available to us by our beloved devotees. We plan to extend this initiative to bring a greater focus on the Vachanas composed by Basavanna to promote equality and harmony in the society during the 12th Century.

Kindly take some time to review this proposal and kindly make your best efforts to help us achieve this missionary project to promote the teachings of this Son of Ingleshwar who was responsible for founding a new religion based on equality and compassion for all human beings.
If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
Shri. MNP Channabasava Swamy

Shunya to Shunya - By Dr.Guru S.Bale

Allamaprabhu is the greatest Jangama ever lived. He wrote about 10 million vachanas but only 3000 are available. Some of his vachanas are simple but most are in a riddle form. Without the explanation from the learned, they are hard to understand. The book ‘Allama Prabhudevara vacana-nirvacana’ by Sri Siddeshwara Swamy of Bijapur is extremely useful in understanding 694 vachanas of Allama. In this book Sri Siddeshwara Swamy explains each vachana line by line. This book is in Kannada and many of our children and even some adults cannot read and understand their real meaning.

Guru S. Bale has translated the above book into English, and it has been published as ‘Shunya to Shunya’. The book was released on March 4 2009 in a simple ceremony with the blessing of Sri Shivaratri Deeshikendra mahaswamygalu, Suttur mata. Dr Shivaskumaraswamiji of Siddaganga mata, Thumkur has blessed with a benedictory note. Our present Chief Minister, Honorable Dr.Yediyurappa says; ‘Dr. Bale’s services as ‘those of a cultural ambassador contributing to enrich the quality of life here and also there’.

Previously Guru Bale has published three books namely, ‘Siddalingeshwara Shatsthala’, ‘Qualities of Veerashaiva’, and ‘Divine Guides’. Siddalingeshwara Shatsthala is an abridge version of shatsthala siddhanta by Siddalingeshwara himself. This book gives abridge version of the Veerashaiva philosophy. The second book, Quality of Veerashaiva lists 52 qualities of Basavanna as told by Akkamahadevi. Each of the qualities is explained using vachanas of sharanas. Divine Guides is the abridge version of 63 sharanas and sharanes biographies. This is very helpful in teaching children’s about the way of life of sharanas.

Because of weight restrictions, only twelve copies are available for sale. The cost of the book is set at $50. Proceedings from the sale of this book and other books (available at $5 each) will be donated to charities. You can purchase copy of the books by calling Guru Bale at 1-732-494-7392.

VSNA Blog - President's Introduction

Dear Fellow Veerashaivas,

Learning to communicate effectively is a life-long process. Often it is a combination of trial and error and learning the hard way. This process contributes-sometimes positively and at other times negatively--to perceptions of ourselves and others.

People communicate in the best way they know and do not realize when and how they are failing to convey their intended message. When it is understood that the message is not clear, it is not a matter of blaming the past or making excuses; rather, it involves the maturity to recognize and change the elements of your communication that are not serving you well for those that are more effective. It is a matter of saying or thinking: 'No matter what has happened in the past, do I want this pattern or behavior now'? 'It is my choice to behave, react, respond differently and now I choose to do it another way.' 'Past is past; I cannot go on behaving the way I have in the past and expect anything other than the responses I evoked in the past'. There is a saying: When you think the way you have always thought, you will act the way you have always acted and you will get what you have always got.

The word, communication, in itself tells a story. It is derived from the Latin word communis meaning common. Some other words derived from this root are community, communion and communitarian. We communicate by creating common ground with those to whom we speak. When that is established a sense of community is begun and then followed by something greater than the whole; a spirit of community, which by some might be termed a kind of communion. The result of community spirit is the fostering and nurturing of people who co-operate, form effective teams, become friends and can be called communitarians.

With this in mind we are proud to release the BLOG “IVA NAMMAVA” (Universal Acceptance) as a communication tool for all the latest updates for our VSNA organization.

This can be accessed at http://vsnablog.blogspot.com/

Developing a sense of community is important in the day to day running of our VSNA Organization . Those with good communication skills and an understanding of the importance of the Our community soon develop a rapport with their colleagues. This fosters and creates a pleasant atmosphere where support and a sense of ease and co-operation are predominant. The result is good team building and focus on the projects and aims of the day rather than personal issues that arise because there is a perceived lack of support or dialog.

The successful organization knows these things well and practices them at every opportunity. By Communicating everyone can gain. The moment, the focus is on individual issues, the organization suffers with delays, poor quality attention, and perhaps fails. Good communication skills are needed by everyone to see that the work gets done in good spirit.

Yours Truly,
Sundaresh Siddiah
President of VSNA
